Mrs. Allene Capes Burton of Covington, died August 14, 2009, at the age of 78. A lifelong resident of Newton County, and member of First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Burton was the first woman appointed as Covington City Clerk, a position she capably filled for 20 years. After resigning from her position as city clerk, she campaigned for and was elected to a seat on the City Council, a position which she held for 20 years. She was also the first woman elected Mayor of the City of Covington. During her time in public service, she was most concerned with the interests of the employees of the City. Mrs. Burton was named Poet Laureate of Newton County by Newton County Board of Commissioners, by a resolution passed on August 6, 1985. She succeeded the previous Poet Laureate, Mamie Ozburn Odum. Her entire life revolved around the City of Covington. Mrs. Burton was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Burton, Jr., and parents, John Zack and Inez Johnson Capes. Survivors include her children, John Mark Burton of Covington, Zachary Carter Burton of Canton; brother, John Robert Capes of Myrtle Beach, SC; and two nieces. Funeral Services for Mrs. Burton will be held Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 11 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Rd., with Rev. William B. Wade and Mr. Frank Turner officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Monday, August 17, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.
