A.D. Walker, of Covington, passed away Feb. 15, 2017, at the age of 83. Mr. Walker went on active duty for the Army in January 1952; but was honorably discharged, due to injury, later that year. Mr. Walker attended Embry-Riddle School of Aviation, in Miami, Florida, briefly, before going to work for Western Electric where he retired after 25 years of dedicated employment. During layoff periods with Western Electric, he worked as a firefighter, at Station 12 in Atlanta, and for Atlanta Gas Light. While employed with Western Electric, he served the Communications Workers of America - Local 3290 as Local President, Secretary-Treasurer, and State Representative. Additionally, Mr. Walker was elected and served one term as Newton County Commissioner in the late ‘70s. He went full-time with the International CWA, in 1983, for ten years. During these years, his work required him to move to North Carolina, New Jersey, Washington, DC, and Louisiana, before retiring in l993. After retiring, he was re-elected as Local 3290 President, in 1994, for two terms. In 2000, he began a 10-year career delivering cars for Enterprise Leasing. At the age of 77, Mr. Walker decided it was time to start enjoying retirement. One of the things he enjoyed most was cooking barbeque for The Baptist Tabernacle and school fundraisers. Not to be forgotten was his love for talking politics and telling stories. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherry Brooks; parents, Reginald and Nora (Rowland) Walker.
Survivors include his wife, Resa Walker; sons and daughter-in-law, Lee and Anne Walker, Scott Walker; son-in-law, Bobby Brooks, all of Covington; granddaughter, Michelle Chapman of West Virginia; great-grandchildren, Kayle Brooks, Caleb Brooks, Davey Chapman, Lillian Chapman.
Funeral Services for Mr. Walker will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, 12 p.m., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. David R. Moody officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with his family at the funeral home, Friday, Feb. 17, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mr. Walker’s memory to The Baptist Tabernacle Building Fund, 10119 Access Road, Covington, GA 30014.
