Youth struck by logging truck on Hwy. 36
DEVELOPING

An Alcovy High School student is sedated at Egleston Hospital in Atlanta after being hit by a logging truck on Hwy. 36 Jan. 14.

During Thursday night’s Newton County Board of Commissioner’s meeting, District 1 Commissioner John Douglas requested prayers for the student, Christian Mason, and his family, and described the accident as the truck’s mirror striking the 14-year-old.

Horace Stroud, a friend of the family, said Mason is concussed and currently heavily sedated.

According to Investigator Jeff Alexander of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), the driver of the logging truck was unaware that the youth had been hit. A short time later, Covington police were able to stop the driver on the Covington Bypass near the Post Office after the NCSO released witnesses’ description of the truck.

The victim was flown to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta by Airlife.

Alexander said no charges have been filed against the driver at this time.
