Officers from the Covington Police Department arrested 18-year-old Ulysses Tyrel Benton of Oxford after he allegedly attempted an armed robbery of a home on Geiger Street Sunday night.

According to CPD Detective D.J. Seals, the victim heard a knock at his door at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night and, when he opened the door, he was confronted by a man wielding a gun.

The man, who detectives allege was Benton, reportedly demanded money from the resident while holding the gun. The quick thinking victim slammed the door in Benton’s face, according to Seals and ran through the home, escaping out the back door.

Officers responded to the area within minutes and quickly canvassed the area, speaking to witnesses and residents. On Wednesday they arrested Benton and charged the young man with criminal attempt to commit robbery.

Seals credits the officers’ canvassing attempts with the quick arrest of Benton. After speaking with Benton, however, Seals said that detectives have decided to question more witnesses in this case and looking at more people who may have been involved as well.
