A man told Covington police he snatched a shotgun from a would-be bandit, early Sunday, then hit the gunman several times in the face and nose.

According to reports, the man was walking his dog on Greenleaf Court around 1:20 a.m. when a black male came up and pointed a sawed off shotgun at him and demanded money. The man told officers that the bandit worked the slide on the shotgun several times as he approached, but the man was able to grab the gun and strike the bandit.

The would-be thief ran away to a small, four-door car that was green in color. There were other men in the car, but no description was available from the man. The would-be gunman was described as thin and about 5-feet-6, wearing a red and white hat, blue overalls with the shoulder straps pulled down to his waist and a dark shirt or coat.

The gun was recovered from the victim. It is a Remington 870 Express Magnum 12-gauge that had been sawed off. It is being stored in evidence.
