A Covington couple currently has a case open with the Department of Family and Children Services after a 2-year-old boy was found playing outside near heavy traffic with no adult around.

Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were called to the intersection of Ga. Highway 36 and Laurie Lane late Tuesday morning by a man who said he’d found the little boy, sitting on the corner, wearing nothing but a diaper and playing alone.

While authorities were there, the boy’s mother arrived and reportedly told deputies that she had left the child with her boyfriend while she went to the store. The boyfriend was still asleep at their home on Laurie Lane when authorities arrived. He allegedly told deputies that he had no idea the child had left the house as he slept.

DFACS was advised of the case and will be checking on the family.
