For the first time Newton County residents were charged for using the county’s Neighborhood Recycling Centers. The centers, which have been in use by residents to dispose their waste for free for 20 years, went to a pay service in October.
In order to access the centers residents were required to purchase a car tag which became available on Sept. 15. The tags cost $50 and are good through June, or until the centers close — whichever comes first. That plan was set in motion in July. The county faced backlash for the decision and had protests during at least two public meetings.
