Test results out for Newton schools

The Newton County School System has released standardized test scores for its middle and elementary schools.

County students in grades three through eight showed a 73 percent improvement from the previous school year, according to a release from Superintendent Gary Mathews. The system still trails the state average, though, in each category except third grade reading.

Here are the school-by-school results:

MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Clements: Scores cannot be compared to previous year as Clements was a Theme School in 2009-2010, not a zoned middle school as in 2010-2011. The school matched the state average in percent of students meeting or exceeding standards on the seventh grade science test but was below the state average in other categories.
Cousins: Significant improvement was made in each grade on each test. The school surpassed the state average on the eighth grade reading test, the sixth grade language arts test, the sixth grade math test, and the sixth grade science test. Cousins equaled the state average on the seventh and eighth grade math test and the seventh grade reading test.
Indian Creek: Indian Creek showed an increase in the number of students meeting or exceeding standards in all three grades on the reading test. The school also posted gains on the passing rate of the seventh grade language arts test, sixth and seventh grade math test, seventh grade science test, and the sixth and seventh grade social studies test. Indian Creek topped the state pass rate in sixth grade reading, eighth grade language arts, and all three grades in science.
Liberty: Liberty Middle School posted numerous gains on the CRCT in 2011, including gains across the board (all three grades) in math, science, and social studies. Liberty also posted gains in sixth and seventh grade Reading. The school outperformed the state in seventh and eighth grade Math, and eighth grade Science.
Veterans Memorial: The school increased achievements on all testing categories in eighth grade and in seventh grade language arts. The school also topped the state pass rate on the eighth grade reading, language arts and science tests.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
East Newton: The school posted gains on the passing rate across the board on the reading test and saw an increase in the number of students meeting or exceeding standards in fourth grade language
arts, fourth and fifth grade math, fourth grade science and fourth grade social studies. East Newton topped the state in numerous tests, including all three grades in science and social studies, as well as third and fifth grade reading, fifth grade language arts, and fourth and fifth grade math.
Fairview Theme: Only third grade scores are comparable for Fairview as the Theme School did not have a fourth or fifth grade the previous school year. Fairview posted an increase on the pass rate in both third grade Language Arts and third grade Science. In addition, the school had a 90 percent or better pass rate in 12 of the 15 test groups. Overall Fairview Theme School bested the state in every test category.
Ficquett: The school posted gains on the pass rate in third and fifth grade reading, language arts, math, and science and third grade social studies. Ficquett surpassed the state pass rate in third grade reading, science, and social studies.
Heard-Mixon: Heard-Mixon increased the number of students meeting or exceeding standards in third and fourth grade reading, language arts, and science, as well as fourth and fifth grade math and fourth grade social studies. The school outperformed the state across the board in math. In addition, the school bested the state in third and fourth grade reading, language arts, science, and social studies.
Live Oak: The school posted gains on the number of students meeting or exceeding standards in third grade reading and language arts and third and fourth grade math, science, and social studies.
Livingston: The school increased achievement in fourth and fifth grade reading, language arts, math, and social studies, and fifth grade science. The school outperformed the state in fourth grade reading,
language arts, and math and equaled the state pass rate in third grade reading.
Mansfield: The school increased the pass rate across the board in third and fifth grade, showing improvement in each of the five subject tests. All of the fifth grade students passed the language arts tests. The school matched the state pass rate in fourth grade math and reading, and bested the state in all of the remaining categories.
Middle Ridge: The school improved pass rates in all three grade levels in language arts and math and posted gains on the pass rate in third and fourth grade reading and science, and fourth and fifth grade social
studies. Middle Ridge bested the state pass rate in fourth grade math.
Oak Hill: The school increased the pass rate in all three grades in math, and posted gains in fifth
grade reading, third grade language arts, fifth grade science, and third grade social studies. Oak Hill topped the state pass rate in fifth grade reading, third and fifth grade language arts, fifth grade math, and fifth grade science and social studies. The school matched the state average in fourth grade math and social studies.
Palmer-Stone: The school increased achievement in third and fourth grade reading, language arts, math, and social studies, fourth and fifth grade science, and third and fourth grade social studies. The school bested the state pass rate in all three grade levels in science and social studies, and in third and fourth grade reading and language arts. The school topped the state on the fourth grade math test.
Porterdale: The school showed improvement in all three grade levels in math, science, and social studies and increased achievement in fourth and fifth grade reading and third and fourth grade language arts. The school's fourth grade students topped the state pass rate in all subjects. The third grade class equaled the state pass rate in math.
Rocky Plains: The school increased the pass rate across all three grade levels in language arts and
posted gains on the pass rate in third and fifth grade reading, fourth and fifth grade math and fourth grade
science and social studies. The school surpassed the state average across the board in reading and language
arts. The fourth grade class outperformed the state on every category.
South Salem: The school increased the number of students meeting or exceeding standards in third grade reading, third and fourth grade language arts, fourth and fifth grade math, and fourth grade science and social studies. The school topped the state pass rate on the fifth grade math test.
West Newton: The school increased achievement in fourth grade language arts, math and social studies as well as fifth grade science and third grade social studies, but fell below the state average on each test
category.

Although Challenge Charter Academy (CCA) is an independent charter school governed by a separate board of directors, the Georgia Department of Education does include the school's scores in the school system's averages. The academy posted gains in all three grades in social studies and seventh and eighth grade reading and language arts, and seventh grade math. The school did not meet or exceed the state
pass rate on any test category.
