An 18-year-old remains in the Newton County Jail after allegedly busting another teen’s head open with a baseball bat in a fight over a girl.
According to Newton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison, the 17-year-old victim was hanging out with friends at a neighborhood gazebo when a girl walked by. One of the teens exchanged words with the girl and the conversation turned ugly. The girl allegedly began yelling and cursing at the group, then walked to a nearby parking lot. She then reportedly talked with 18-year-old Jamitre Weaver. Weaver walked over to the group and asked them what they said to the girl. According to a witness, the victim told Weaver they had told the girl "if she was going to yell and scream she could leave." According to reports, Weaver walked back to his car, grabbed an aluminum baseball bat and returned to the group, striking the victim in the back of the head with the bat. A fight ensued. At some point, someone yelled "police" and everyone scattered, including the victim, who went to his home. When his mother got home that evening and saw the extent of her son’s injuries, she took him to the hospital where he required four staples to close the wound. Weaver was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault.
