A 15-year-old male student at Newton High School was taken into custody Sept. 17 after a teacher noticed him with what turned out to be a homemade shank.

According to 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office an alert administrator noticed the student was holding something suspicious around his wrist area. When the administrator moved closer he noticed it was a sharp metal object, according to reports.

Contact was made with the student by deputies and they found that along with the shank — a homemade knife — taped to his wrist, he had another shank on him as well. The student was detained and processed, then was turned over to juvenile authorities. The juvenile was charged with having weapons in a school safety zone.

At Eastside High School a 15-year-old boy was arrested after an argument with an administrator revealed the youth had a knife on him.

Mitchell said a NCSO deputy on duty as a resource officer at EHS was called to help out with a disturbance involving a disruptive student around 4 p.m. Friday.

The student had exited the school and was reportedly trying to reenter the building and when the administrator told him he could not come back in, the student allegedly became belligerent.

When the deputy came to speak with the student he continued behaving irately with the deputy, according to reports, and was subsequently taken into custody. While being searched, the deputy allegedly found a 6-inch knife on the boy.

The juvenile was charged with having weapons in a school safety zone and obstruction of officers/resisting arrest.

"Weapons of any kind are not permitted on school property," said Sherri Viniard, Newton County Schools public relations director. "Students found in possession of a weapon are disciplined according to the handbook and automatically reported to law enforcement."
