Interstate 20 opened around 5 a.m. this morning following an investigation of the scene where a firefight broke out on the interstate, and the suspect was shot and killed by a Covington Police officer.

According to CPD Lt. Wendell Wagstaff, a Georgia State Patrol officer tried to stop a car traveling in excess of 90 mph on I-20 in Newton County around 9 p.m. Wednesday. During the chase a CPD officer joined to assist the trooper.

A four-mile chase ended near exit 93 when the trooper initiated a PIT maneuver to stop the speeding vehicle.

Wagstaff said the suspect began shooting at officers from his driver's side window.

Return fire from officers killed the suspect.

The State Trooper and the CPD officer were not injured in the firefight. A female passenger in the suspect's car was also not injured.
