Authorities are advising residents to stay at home and the local governments are closed, but if you need groceries or other goods, Covington's major retailers are open today. Here's a look at their hours, which could change if the weather worsens:
Update 2:30 p.m., Main Street Downtown Business Council: The council's meeting this evening is cancelled. The council will meet next Jan. 18 at 6 p.m., according to Main Street Director Josephine Kelly.
U.S. Post Office in Covington: Post Office Manager Jerry Romero said no mail will be delivered Tuesday because, for the second straight day, trucks were not able to make the trek from the Duluth processing center to the Covington office. Romero said he expected the mail to be delivered Wednesday and would not know for sure by 8 a.m. tomorrow.
Newton County government: Closed today all day.
City of Covington government: The city is closed to the public today, but employees are working the phones. Residents can still pay bills or conduct other business by phone or online.
City of Oxford: The mayor and city council have rescheduled its monthly work esssion to 6 p.m. Thursday in the Oxford West Clark Street Community Center.
Ingles: At this time, both Ingles Markets locations in Covington are operating at normal hours and will close at 10 p.m. tonight.
Kmart on Turner Lake Road: Open now and will be closing sometime around 5 p.m.
Kroger in Newton Plaza on U.S. Highway 278: Open now and should be open 24 hours.
Publix on Salem Road: Opened at 9 a.m. and is supposed to close at 10 p.m.
Walmart on Ga. Highway 142: Opened at 8 a.m., should remain open all day.
