Smoke may be present in Newton County today as a prescribed fire is being conducted in Jasper and Jones counties.

The fire could cause smoke in the area of Butts, Jasper, Jones, Morgan, Newton and Walton counties.

The fire will be carried out by the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, in order to reduce hazardous forest fire fuels and improve wildlife habitat.

The burn is expected to be complete by 7 p.m.
