Just under a year after a warrant for his arrest was issued for his involvment in the murder of Adrian Brooks in July of 2014, Horace Coates was arrested Friday.

Coates was located and arrested in the 7900 block of Tallahasee Avenue in Jacksonville, Florida by the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Task Force and the Florida Law Enforcement Division without incident.

Coates was able to evade law enforcement throughout the past year by using multiple aliases, according to Newton County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) Sgt. Cortney Morrison.

Brooks, a 35-year-old Newton County man, was fatally wounded on July 3, 2014. He was shot in the abdomen around 8 p.m. in the Gum Tree neighborhood off Kirkland Road. The victim’s girlfriend called 911 to report the shooting and three unknown men were seen fleeing in a vehicle similar to a white Toyota Camry soon after the shooting.

Brooks was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

On July 10, 2014 the NCSO identified 23-year-old Abdul Davon Williams, a.k.a "Lil Dreads" as a suspect in Brooks murder, and he was arrested on July 30, 2014.

No motive for the shooting has been identified at this time.

The case is under investigation and anyone with any information is asked to contact the NCSO at 678-625-1400 or by leaving at an anonymous tip at newtonsheriffga.org.
