Schools plan public service events

Troy University in Covington and Georgia Career Institute in Conyers will hold public service events in the coming week.

On Saturday, June 22, GCI will hold a "Cut-A-Thon" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to promote the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The private charity is not government-affiliated and is supported by private donations.

At the event, haircuts will be available for a minimum $5 donation. There also will be chair massages, polish changes, and makeup applications performed by students. GCI has set a $4,000 fundraising goal.

The Georgia Career Institute is located at 900 Flat Shoals Road, Conyers.

Troy blood drive

Troy University will hold a Red Cross blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m., June 26, on its campus at 1160 Monticello St., Covington. Appointments can be made by visiting and entering the sponsor code troycov. Walk-ins also are welcome.

Participants should make sure to get a good night’s rest before donating blood. They also should eat a well-balanced, nutritious meal, and drink lots of fluids during the 48 hours before donating.
