SAVANNAH, Ga. - With their principal's encouragement, a group of Savannah High School students wrote a song about a fixture in hip-hop culture - removable gold teeth known as grills.

The idea for the song came after principal Toney Jordan constantly instructed his students to look and act like scholars, and to never speak to him with their gold teeth in.

"He stays on me about following school rules," said senior Raynell Murrel, who wrote the song with other students during their winter break. "I call it, 'I can't hear you with that gold in your mouth.'"

After Jordan heard it, he asked technology teacher Deborah Hargroves to help the students produce a video.

"It has become a school-wide project," Hargroves said. "Everyone is going to have a part - the band, the cheerleaders, even the staff will do little dance routines."

The students plan to enter the project in student media contests and host a video release party.

"Our kids are talented and creative and they can find inspiration in just about anything," Jordan said.
