Salvation Army to hose June 22 car show

The Covington City Council didn’t have its regularly scheduled Monday meeting because it didn’t have a quorum — the number of members needed to have a majority vote.

Council members Janet Goodman, Ocie Franklin and Mike Whatley were absent, along with Mayor Ronnie Johnson. Franklin made it to the meeting, but only after the decision had been made to cancel the meeting, according to City Clerk Audra Gutierrez.

City Manager Leigh Anne Knight got an informal consensus from the three council members in attendance to approve two city road closures.

Bessie
There will be one day of road closures for filming of the HBO movie “Bessie” about famous blues singer Bessie Smith.
On Tuesday, June 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Hendrick Street will be closed in between Washington and Reynolds Streets. Washington and Reynolds streets will also have intermittent traffic control during that time.

Salvation Army car show
The Salvation Army Canteen — the arm of the Salvation Army that provides mobile food centers to help during disasters and other community events — is hosting a car show from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22 on the Square.

The Square, and roads immediately off the Square, will be closed off from noon until 5:30 p.m.; Pace Street will be the entrance for the car show.

The entry fee is $10 and a canned food item; registration for the show will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Attendees are also encouraged to donate money and canned goods.

All proceeds and donations will be used to help the people in Newton County.

Next Covington meeting
Knight said the other items on Monday’s agenda are able to be moved to the city’s next meeting without harm. The next council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 16. The City Council always has a work session at 6 p.m. immediately preceding the official council meeting.
