Registration is now open to anyone willing to help keep Newton’s rivers clean.

Keep Covington/Newton Beautiful, the city of Covington, the Georgia Wildlife Federation, and the Newton County Water & Sewerage Authority will host the annual RIVERS ALIVE! cleanup event Saturday, Oct. 5, and is looking for volunteers for the event. Individuals, families, businesses, churches, clubs and other organizations are invited to pre-register for the event. Volunteers will clean assigned areas of the Alcovy, South and Yellow rivers.  Volunteers will meet at Longhorn Steakhouse, U.S. Highway 278 at 9 a.m., where they will receive a free breakfast, t-shirts and cleaning supplies. They will then split into groups to travel to cleanup locations.

After the cleanup, volunteers are invited to eat lunch and participate in educational activities at noon at the Georgia Wildlife Federation, 11600 Hazelbrand Road. Laurie Riley, director of KCNB previously said RIVERS ALIVE! was created to address issues with water pollution and to provide solutions for the problem.

In the past, the event has had more than 300 volunteers participate.

Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and should prepare to get wet.
