If you plan to travel on I-20 westbound (towards Atlanta) through Newton and Rockdale counties on Saturday or Sunday, you might want plan ahead before you leave home. Resurfacing begins on Interstate 20 in Rockdale and Newton counties this weekend and will continue on weekends and weeknights.

From 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, two left lanes will be closed on I-20 westbound from Almon Road in Newton County to SR 20/SR 138 in Rockdale as crews will be removing the old asphalt and replacing it with new ashpalt.

"This section of roadway was last paved in 1988 and is definitely in need of resurfacing," said District Construction Engineer Shun Pringle. "Call 511 and plan your alternate route ahead of time if you want to miss the delays."

Most of the work on the $11.5 million project will be done at night and on weekends and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The contractor is Pittman Construction Company.
