The Chi Tau Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which serves Newton and Rockdale counties, held a tea party and celebration recently for its Emerging Young Leaders program graduates.
The EYL program for middle school girls is designed to ensure academic excellence while helping participants develop lifelong skills of advocacy, leadership and community service.
After completion of the EYL program, girls have the opportunity to participate in the Ivy Prep leadership and mentoring program for girls in grades 9-12, sponsored by Chi Tau Omega.
EYL graduates were Melanie Bandoo, Jameriah Clark, Imani Hampton, Kennedi Hunter, Jayla Ores, Arielle Pritchett, Ciara Sanders, Micah Sheppard, Logan Weaver and Laurynne Williams.
Brianna Clark, an Ivy Prep participant and valedictorian of Alcovy High School, spoke to the EYL graduates about moving forward and preparing for high school.
Chi Tau Omega partners with various community organizations to implement the EYL program and partnered with the Red Hatters of Turner Lake for the EYL tea. Paulette Graves, a member of the Red Hatters of Turner Lake, spoke to the young ladies about tea parties and tea party etiquette.
Call for Nominations Georgia Women of Achievement Awards 2014
The 2014 Georgia Women of Achievement Award program’s nomination period will close June 30. While nominations are accepted on an ongoing basis, all qualifying nominations submitted by the deadline will be considered for the 2014 GWA Award.
Candidates for the annual award must be native to or clearly identified with the state of Georgia, must be deceased for 10 or more years, and must have made enduring contributions in their fields of endeavor that would serve as an inspiration to future generations.
Up to three awards will be presented at the 2014 Georgia Women of Achievement Induction ceremony and luncheon, March 14 at Wesleyan College in Macon.
The organization’s online museum features the stories of 70 Georgia women. Biographical videos, courtesy of a partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting, bring the lives of the extraordinary women to life.

Courtney Clark of Oxford has been admitted to Saint Augustine’s University for the fall semester. Established in 1867, St. Augustine’s is a four-year liberal arts university in Raleigh, N.C.
