Newton High School Assistant Principal Sandra Owens has been named the new principal of Alcovy High School.
The Newton County Board of Education approved appointing Owens to the position at its meeting Tuesday night, after discussing the matter in executive session.
Owens replaces interim principal Vic Lee, who has been serving as interim principal for Alcovy High School since November 2012, when former principal LaQuanda Carpenter went on maternity leave.
Carpenter left the school system earlier this year to follow her husband and fellow administrator Dennis Carpenter, who got a superintendent job in Missouri.
Lee will continue to serve as interim principal for AHS until the end of this school year. Owens will begin as AHS principal July 1.
Owens has been an administrator with the Newton County School System for the last seven years serving at Newton High School and at Clements Middle School.
She holds a B.B.A. degree in accounting from the University of Central Arkansas, a M.S.A. degree in Human Resources Management from Central Michigan University, an Ed.S. degree in Math Education from the University of Georgia, and an Ed.D. degree in Teacher Leadership from Walden University
“Dr. Owens will put Alcovy on a very good path,” said outgoing NCSS superintendent Gary Mathews.
