A Newton County woman was killed Tuesday night when her vehicle was struck by a car reportedly being driven by two men who authorities were looking for in connection with an earlier armed robbery and shooting.
Shirley Akin, 56, was driving a gray Honda when a black Nissan Maxima, driven by the suspects, allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Flat Shoals and Salem Road, dodging several cars in the intersection before striking Akin's vehicle. Akin was transported to Rockdale Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reportedly saw some of the suspects from the black Nissan get out of the car after the crash and flee the scene on foot, said Rockdale County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Jodi Shupe. One suspect from the Nissan, a black male, was caught after a short chase. He was reportedly uninjured from the crash and placed under arrest. Shupe said his name and charges are being withheld for now while the investigation is ongoing.
The robbery and shooting reportedly occurred around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Harvest Grove Lane, located at an apartment complex off of Iris Drive, according to Shupe. The shooting victim was transported to Atlanta Medical Center with a bullet wound in his wrist.
