A Salem Road daycare is being investigated by the Newton County Sheriff's Office on charges they injured a 4-year-old girl Feb. 22.

The child was staying with family friends while her parents were out of town, according to NCSO Deputy and Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison. The family friends dropped the girl off at First Steps Development Center on Salem Road. When they picked her up that afternoon, the girl reportedly told them her teacher "grabbed her around the chest and by the front of the face and pushed her head into a toilet and called her stupid," Morrison said.

The child's parents were notified immediately by friends, according to Morrison and they made a report of the incident Wednesday. The criminal investigative division is currently investigating the accusations of battery and cruelty made by the child.

"The little girl did have visible injuries consistent with someone grabbing her on the arms and the chest and a bump on the head that you could feel but not see," said Morrison.

Tyeshia Holmes, who identified herself as First Steps Development Center's director was asked about the accusations Thursday afternoon and declined to comment on them.
