Members of the Covington Police Department pose with officer Morgan after he received his uniform.

Morgan Steward, 6-year-old Rocky Plains Elementary School student, was given an official Covington Police uniform Tuesday.

Morgan, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at 15 months, was named an honorary police officer by Covington Police Chief Stacey Cotton a year ago. He received a “police wheelchair” led the Lions Club Covington Parade, donned his police costume and met Shaquille O’neal in 2013. In 2014, he got his official uniform and will begin a Safety Program for students around Newton County.

The Safety Program will be at Rocky Plains Elementary School from 9-10 a.m., and consist of an assembly of 700 students. Steward, along with Covington Police officers will teach the importance of vehicle safety, and honor the 12 local school bus drivers for their services.

Among the tips are: stay seated at all times while the school bus is in motion; no fighting, yelling or bullying on the bus and always talk to your bus driver with kindness and respect.
