A large 18-wheeler truck will pull up to The BirthCare Center entrance at Newton Medical Center on Oct. 15 loaded with two new Sechrist hyperbaric oxygen chambers.

The chambers were a special delivery for the newly opened Newton Wound Care Advantage Center, located on the second floor of the hospital near the Physical Therapy department.

The chambers were offloaded by a forklift and carefully moved through the second floor hallways to their destination in the Wound Care Center. Each chamber weighs at 2,400 pounds with dimensions of 105 inches long, 40 inches wide and a height of 57 inches.

"With both hyperbaric chambers safely in their new home in the Wound Care Center, we can say that we’re one step closer to being one of the most advanced wound care programs in Georgia," said Michelle Green, program director.

Wound Care Advantage, a company that specializes in the treatment of non-healing wounds, is managing Newton Medical Center’s wound care program, which opened in September.

"This partnership with the Wound Care Advantage team allows us to maintain and expand this very essential service to our patients," explains Dr. Carter Rogers, medical director for the center. Rogers is a general, vascular and thoracic surgeon on staff at NMC.

Newton Wound Care Advantage offers a multidisciplinary approach to chronic wound issues with a specially trained medical staff of surgeons, podiatrists, internal medicine specialists and nurses using advanced wound care dressings, engineered skin substitutes and soon, the added benefit of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment, administered by delivering 100 percent oxygen at pressures greater than two to three times the normal atmospheric (sea level) pressure to a patient in an enclosed chamber.

Hyperbaric oxygen acts as a drug, eliciting varying levels of response at different dosages and is effective as adjunctive therapy for specifically indicated wound care conditions.
