Fazio, a native of Long Island, N.Y., who was raised in Florida, has worked in newspapers since 1999, earning awards as an editor, sports writer, feature writer and photographer. He has lived in the Atlanta area for four years, after covering high school football in Valdosta for three years. He attended the University of South Florida.

Smith, a North Carolina native, is a former news reporter for The Cheraw Chronicle in Chesterfield County, S.C., and former sports editor of the Laurinburg Exchange in Laurinburg, N.C. He is a cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

"Publisher Charles Hill Morris and I are pleased that Bryan Fazio has become news editor,’’ said T. Pat Cavanaugh, general manager of The Covington News. "His dedication and pride in his work will help us to continue to be a strong community newspaper.’’

"We are also pleased to have Matt Smith on board,’’ Cavanaugh said. "His enthusiasm for sports will soon be evident. He shares our commitment to providing strong coverage of local sports and local athletes.’’
