The Town of Newborn may soon start paying its mayor and council members. On April 6 the council will decide whether to amend the town charter to start paying the mayor $100 per month and each council member $75 per month for the 2010 fiscal year.
Town attorney Joe Reitman said he thought the increase was "to induce candidates to run for mayor and council in the future."
"It is more of a symbolic gesture due to the small amount, I suppose, but a nice gesture nonetheless," Reitman said.
The mayor and council members meet one Monday a month for town council meetings and also attend occasional work sessions and special meetings.
Previous growth estimates place Newborn’s 2009 population at more than 800.
