A Covington man was shot in the hip on May 28 following an end-of-the-year party on Stone Road, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO).
According to Sgt. Cortney Morrison of the NCSO, deputies responded to a person shot at a Stone Street duplex in Oxford. There was an end-of-the-year party, she said, and as the party grew more crowded, fights began to break out and spilled over into the front yard. While the victim ran to his vehicle to leave, shots were fired and he was hit in the hip.
While deputies were responding, they saw a 16-year-old male running from the scene and a chase ensued, said Morrison. Deputies had noticed a gun in the male’s hands while he was running, but when they caught up to him, the gun was gone. Deputies went back to the area where the young man had been and found a BB gun.
Deputies determined the 16-year-old was not responsible for the shooting, but he was charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer, loitering and prowling, and disorderly conduct.
The shooting is still under investigation and there are currently no leads, said Morrison.
