A Newton County Sheriff’s Office detention officer was arrested Thursday, Aug. 28 for inappropriate contact with a minor and, as of Friday, remained in custody at the Newton County Detention Center, according to NCSO Sgt. Cortney Morrison.

Jacon Allen Vanderzwart, 23, of Covington, was immediately terminated from his employment with NCSO after his arrest.

NCSO responded to a call on Riverbend Dr. by a mother reporting her daughter was raped, according to the incident report. When the officer arrived on the scene, it was determined the minor, being 16 years old, engaged in consensual acts of sexual contact.

As per protocol, the Criminal Investigation Division received the complaint and conducted a thorough investigation, according to an NCSO press release. During a standard forensic interview, the minor disclosed “inappropriate pictures were sent and received by Jacob Allen Vanderzwart” before the girl turned 16. “Probable cause was obtained, and a warrant was issued.”

Vanderzwart was charged with electronically furnishing pornography to a minor.
