Morgan, McKelvey elected, Whatley retains seat
council winners

There will be two new Covington city council members in January.

Voters elected Josh McKelvey over incumbent Keith Dalton in Post 3 East Ward and Kenneth Morgan over incumbent Janet Goodman in Post 1 West Ward Tuesday night.

The third city council seat up for election was Post 2 East Ward with incumbent Michael Whatley defeating Eric Threets.

“I hope it says that [voters] think I’ve done a good job for them,” said Whatley, who will enter his fifth term. “They have the hope in me that I’ll do it for another four years."

Whatley’s win was the biggest margin of the night, topping Threets 497-175. Whatley received 74 percent of the votes.

Of the two council-elects, McKelvey had the largest margin of victory, defeating Dalton by a vote of 416-273, getting 60 percent of the votes.

“It still hasn’t settled in,” McKelvey said. “It’s incredible what Covington was able to accomplish and the different groups that turned out — the groups of people that set aside partisanship and personal agendas; it was amazing.”

Of the changes coming to the city council, the biggest difference will be in Post 1 West Ward, where Goodman has sat for 32 years.

The eight-term city councilwoman tallied 14 votes less than Morgan, who recently retired from working with the city of Covington for 19 years. Morgan received 52 percent of the votes (170-156).

“It was persistence and the fact that people were ready for a change,” Morgan said. “I plan to get to work and get things started and try to accomplish some of the goals and issues that people want addressed.”

Both Morgan and McKelvey will look to deliver on campaign promises when they step into their new roles.

“The real work starts now,” McKelvey said. “I’m going to rely on the community and want to hear from the people.”
