FORSYTH, Ga. - A spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says a group of jail inmates rioted when they were given a sandwich instead of their usual hot meal.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Allison Selman-Willis says eight inmates are charged in last weekend's riot, which she says involved them throwing food trays and yelling. She says the disturbance lasted for about an hour.

Selman-Willis says the jail contracts with the state Department of Corrections for meals, which are trucked in.

She says a strap in the truck broke, causing the meals to spill, and the jail staff decided to provide the inmates with sandwiches.

Selman Willis says inmate Eugene Springer is charged with inciting a riot and seven others are charged with destruction. No serious injuries were reported.
