Officers arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly man-handling his girlfriend Friday night.
Covington Police officers were called to the area of Covington ByPass and U.S. Highway 278 just before 10 p.m. after a female called and told them she had been in a fight with Daniel Ray Miller. The victim told officers that she had been waiting for Miller, who was her boyfriend, to pick her up from work and when he didn't show up, she caught a ride to a co-worker's home.
After she arrived at the co-worker's home, Miller reportedly called her and told her he was on his way to pick her up. When he arrived and she got into the vehicle with him, he immediately began an argument, according to the victim. When she told him to let her out, he refused. The victim told officers that she tried to jump out of the vehicle and Miller grabbed the back of her shirt so she couldn't and continued driving.
According to reports, Miller parked his vehicle on Floyd Street and Newton Drive and she was able to escape. She began running back towards U.S. Highway 278 with Miller in pursuit.
The victim told officers that Miller caught up to her and "placed her in a bear hug and it was hard for her to breathe. Mr. Miller then stated that he would squeeze her until she passed out and drag her back to the vehicle."
Although Miller reportedly told her to stop "before she got him into trouble," the victim began screaming for help. She was eventually able to get into a vehicle with a co-worker and call 911.
Miller was picked up at his home by deputies from the Newton County Sheriff's Office. He was transported to the Newton County Detention Center where he was charged with simple battery under the Family Violence Act.
