The women of Lovejoy United Methodist Church have begun a service project to assist those who have been affected by cancer.

These women have starting cutting and sewing hats for people who are fighting this disease and who have lost their hair in the process. The twenty women involved in this project meet once a month at the church to cut out the patterns for hats. All sewing of the hats, however, is done at home by these women.

Phyllis Gravitt, a member of this project and the preacher’s wife at Lovejoy UMC, stated that "lots of the hats have been made." Although they have not been able to distribute any of their hats to deserving people, Gravitt said that "they hope to give these hats away and not to sell them."

Gravitt also explained how she is hoping to select an oncologist in the Newton County area to work with. The group is hoping to select this oncologist and work directly with him or her to make sure their patients have access to these wonderful "caps." Geneva Stubbs, a cancer survivor herself, is going to be donating some of their caps at her personal oncologist’s office, Dr. Victoria Afshani of the Georgia Cancer Specialists in Conyers.
