Loud music leads to arrest

A Covington man was arrested Sunday evening for underage drinking after an officer stopped his vehicle for loud music.

An officer from the Covington Police Department first noticed 20-year-old Tavarius Rashad Johnston when the SUV he was driving went past his patrol vehicle with the music reportedly blaring.

When Johnston was pulled over, the officer allegedly saw two Coors Light 24-ounce cans in the passenger side floorboard. The beer cans were sweating, indicating they were still cold. When Johnston's license showed he was under 21, the officer asked him to exit his vehicle. When he did, the officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from him. Johnston also admitted to having "a beer," according to reports.

In addition to the two beers, the officer also found 11 24-ounce Bud Ice cans in a plastic bag behind the passenger side front seat. Johnston reportedly said he took them from his parents.

He was transported to the Newton County Detention Center and charged with possession/consumption of alcohol under 21 and was given a warning about loud music from a vehicle.
