Sunday three local area dancers from the Kidz-N-Step dance studio left for the ultimate dance experience in New York City. Deborah Hobbs, 16, Alex Sorohan, 15, and Maggie Beth Callahan, 14, have all competed for, and been hand selected by a panel of judges, to travel to New York.

Jennifer Andrews-Smith, owner and instructor and Kids-N-Step will be chaperoning the girls on their adventure in NYC. Andrews-Smith explained that these girls have, "been competing in national championships for years and they have been preparing for even longer." Andrews-Smith also stated , "the girls will compete at least four to five times a year against teams from across the USA."

The dance competition that sent these girls on their way to NYC was the Kids Artistic Review competition. Kids Artistic Review will also be sponsoring half of the expense for their trip.

"This is an honor for these girls to be chosen and a good way for them to get more hands on experience outside of the Covington and Conyers area," Andrews-Smith said.

Deborah Hobbs, one of the dancers traveling to NYC and the oldest member of this team, described dancing as her stress reliever. Hobbs has been dancing since she was two years old and has been with this group of girls for five years.

"It is my life," Hobbs states when asked what dancing means to her. "(I'm looking forward to) watching the Broadway shows and learning new material from the professionals while I'm in New York."

In New York, the girls will be participating in a rigorous dance schedule. They will begin their week by seeing the Broadway shows "Wicked" and "The Little Mermaid;" there they will be able to meet the casts and do a Q & A with them. From there, they will have the opportunity to dance at the Broadway Dance Center, dance with the famous Rockettes and then end their trip at the Steps on Broadway Dance Center. Andrews-Smith explained that the girls will be doing "tap, jazz, lyrical and hip-hop dance routines."

After all their hard work and preparation these three girls are getting the ultimate pay off, the experience of a lifetime from the dancers they most admire.

Kidz-N-Step dance studio is located at 6221 Highway 278 NW in Covington. The studio is now offering summer classes, camps and they are also starting registration for their new season, which starts Aug 3. Classes are open to children ages 2 and up, and to adults.
