Covington will celebrate the written word on Saturday with the seventh annual Literacy Festival.

The event will be held on the town square from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sponsors are Main Street Covington and The Learning Center.

Activities include games, arts and crafts, sidewalk chalk art and a book walk. There will also be story-time with Miss Carol from the Newton County Library, and a sidewalk chalk art competition sponsored by the Southern Heartland Art Gallery.

"Shake, Rattle & Roll," a concert performed by Scott Douglas and sponsored by the Arts Association in Newton County, will begin at 11 a.m. Students are invited to wear costumes depicting their favorite literary character.
