January is National Mentoring Month and local nonprofit Newton Mentoring is hosting a recruitment reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Porter Memorial Branch Library, 6191 Ga. Highway 212, Covington.

Newton Mentoring partners with the Newton County School System to provide mentors to children in grades K-12.

Adults of all ages are encouraged to become mentors and are only asked to meet with students one hour per week.

For more information about the program visit newtonmentoring.com, call Executive Director Margaret Washington at (678) 381-7948 or email her at newtonmentor@yahoo.com.

Covington Mayor Ronnie Johnston and his wife, Kellie, became mentors after Johnston was elected, and the couple has been big proponents of the program.

Newton Mentoring is always in need of more mentors, particularly male mentors, Washington said.

The Newton County School System has 24 schools and more than 19,000 students, according to its website.
