Officers with the Covington Police Department arrested Wendy Brock Dec. 15 for shoplifting at the Kmart on Turner Lake Road. Brock faked a seizure to avoid arrest.
According to the incident report, Brock placed several items in a bag, paid for a Sprite and told the cashier she had already paid for the items in her bag. When she attempted to leave the store, she was confronted by the store's security personnel.
When the authorities were called, Brock said she was having a seizure. An ambulance was called, but Brock declined medical treatment.
Kmart recovered the items which were two jumbo cookers, nine DVDs, six articles of clothes, a TV organizer, an air bed and a pair of black clogs. The items totaled $495.79.
Brock was transported to the Newton County Jail and charged with shoplifting.
Madison man arrested for DUI, other charges
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff's office arrested Robert Benford Dec. 13 for failing to obey a traffic light, driving on a suspended license and driving under the influence.
According to the incident report, the deputy pulled Benford over after he ran a red light. A license check revealed that Benford's license was suspended in 1992 for a controlled substance violation. Benford was transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center where he was given a breathalyzer test, where his blood alcohol level was .086 at 4:19 a.m. and .090 at 4:22 a.m.
Benford was charged with one count of failure to obey a traffic control device, one count of driving with a suspended license and a DUI.
Loganville man involved in hit and run
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff's office are investigating a hit and run accident Dec. 14 involving a Loganville man who was running along Highway 11.
According to the incident report, the victim was running southbound on Highway 11 when he heard two cars behind him. He said he tried to get out of the way when he was hit by one of the cars and fell into a ditch.
The victim, who identified the car as a red PT cruiser, was transported by ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment.
Witnesses have not been indentified in the case.
Newton High student arrested for carrying marijuana
A Newton High School student was arrested Dec. 12 for possessing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.
According to the incident report, the student had a clear bag with marijuana seeds.
The student was taken into custody and charged with drug possession.
