On Nov. 8, a Covington police officer responded to Kmart at Turner Lake Road in reference to an employee theft.

A Kmart loss prevention officer told the Covington officer that a layaway associate at the store was seen on video surveillance taking money from a cash register.

The loss prevention officer said the employee, later identified as Lindsey Terrell, was recorded on two separate occasions refunding money from closed-out layaway accounts to one of her friends.

The refunded money reportedly was supposed to go to the actual customers who did not pay on the layaway items, but the report said Terrell would give one of her friends the money and the friend would give the money back to her.

The officer spoke with Terrell, who reportedly admitted to taking and keeping $130 worth of disbursements that were supposed to go to customers.

Terrell was arrested on charges of theft by taking and was taken to the Newton County Jail.
