Keno thieves strike two Covington stores

Two men lost from Keno last week without checking their numbers.

According to reports the Newton County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Valero gas station on Brown Bridge and Crowell roads around 10:45 p.m. in reference to a lottery fraud.

The clerk told an NCSO deputy a black male, wearing a red shirt, white pants and red shoes with dread-lock hairstyle came into the store and turned in three Keno slips. The clerk processed the slips before the suspect said he needed to go to his car and get the money.

The clerk told NCSO that the male, then drove off without paying.

Shortly after, NCSO responded to another call at the Citgo on Lovers Lane in reference to a lottery theft. The complainant at the Citgo reported that they were handed three Keno slips, and the male suspect said he left his wallet in his car.

According to reports he then walked to his car and left without paying for his ticket.

Marcus Mathews of Hiram and Justin Coward of Rex were charged with theft by deception and theft of service.
