ATLANTA - A bill meant to crack down on illegal immigration in Georgia is expected to come up for a vote.
The bill sponsored by Rep. Matt Ramsey, a Peachtree City Republican, is on today's House agenda.
It contains provisions to similar ones in a tough new law enacted in Arizona, including authorizing law officers to verify the immigration status of criminal suspects.
It also requires businesses with more than four employees to use a federal database called E-Verify to check the immigration status of all new hires.
The bill would make it a felony to knowingly provide fake documentation when applying for a job.
If it passes the House it will move to the Senate, where a committee is considering a similar bill.
The House Democratic Caucus voted Wednesday to oppose Ramsey's bill.
