I-20 pedestrian bridge project under budget

The Covington City Council learned it would be saving money on the pedestrian bridge over I-20 on SR 81 during Monday’s council meeting.

Randy Connors told the council the bridge was originally planned to be a single-span bridge over the interstate. However, it will now have a support post in the median of the interstate, making it both a little more secure and cheaper.

He also told the council, since the costs were coming in under budget, they would like to add additional lighting.

“We ask, because the cost are coming ni below budget, which is unusual for this type of project … We would like to change out the lighting fixtures along Emory Street along the interstate past Hering Street to the Depot,” Connors said. “The improved lighting will make it much safer for pedestrians and much safer for those traveling from north Covington.

The project is currently $130,000 below budget.
