Investigators are looking for the person who pranked called the Newton County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday night and said five hostages were being held in the Summerset Apartment complex off Salem Road.

When deputies arrived at the specific apartment mentioned by the caller, they made contact with the person living in the apartment and determined that the person in the apartment was not the caller and that the call was a hoax, according to Newton County Deputy Cortney Morrison, a Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

The caller had told authorities he had five hostages and was demanding money; the call came in about 9:15 p.m.

Morrison said the investigators are trying to find out who made the call. They are not releasing the apartment number mentioned in the call or the identity of the person living in that apartment.

The person could be charged with abuse of a 911 call and false reporting of a crime, Morrison said.

Anyone who knows the caller or has information related to the crime can call the Sheriff’s Office anonymous tip line at (678) 625-5007 or go online. People can also call the Sheriff’s Office main number at 678-625-1400.

The Summerset Apartment complex is located off Salem Road, south of its intersection with Fairview Road.
