Head kicking leads to arrest

Officers from the Covington Police Department headed to a hotel on City Pond Road after someone called 911 late Thursday night, then hung the phone up.

When the officers arrived they saw a man flagging them down and holding his ear. He reportedly told officers he had been in one of the rooms hanging out when "a guy jumped on him and kicked him in the head." He identified the person who assaulted him as Jason Lee Carithers.

The victim said he was play wrestling with a female in the room when Carithers jumped up, got mad and started punching and kicking him in the head. Another witness confirmed the victim's story and said the two had run from the room.

Officers went to a room and made contact with Carithers who was lying on the bed. He was placed under arrest for battery and as officers walked him to their patrol car he allegedly said "what would you do if you saw a black guy choking out your girl?" He also kept asking officers why he was being "locked up," according to reports.

When they arrived at the Newton County Detention Center Carithers "acted like he was unable to exit the back seat of the patrol car," so one of the officers used his Taser on Carithers' left leg which prompted him to exit the patrol car.

Since Carithers was reportedly highly intoxicated, nurses at the jail recommended he be transported to Newton Medical Center to be checked out before being checked into the jail.
