There’s never been a better time to buy a house. That’s the classic real estate mantra, but it continues to ring true in a downtrodden housing market that shows no sure signs of recovery. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and the Newton County non-profit Family Community Housing Association are hosting their second free homebuyer education workshop this year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 30 at the Rockdale County Cooperative Extension, 1400 Parker Road in Conyers. Register by calling (770) 787-4436. The workshop will include segments about down payment assistance, money management, mortgage lending, homeowner’s insurance, home inspections and appraisals and the attorney closing process. "I grew up in Newton County and went to high school here, and I want to help people here," association Executive Director Julius Webb said previously. "We’re showing people the whole process. Once they leave this workshop they’ll be fully educated on how to be a first-time homebuyer. A lot of people got stuck with teaser mortgage rates, because they didn’t know. We want to change that." The Family Community Housing Association was formed in 2001, Webb said, and works with area banks including United Bank and McIntosh State Bank in Jackson, as well as the federal and state government.
