An 88-year-old Oxford woman's body was found after a housefire Tuesday morning.

The Newton County Fire Service was called to 936 Cook Road in Oxford at 10:44 a.m. after heavy smoke was reported rising from the single story, 1,000 square foot house.

Newton County Fire Engine 9 was the first on scene at 10:48 a.m., according to Fire Chief Kevin O’Brien.

“Additional units from Newton County Fire as well as the City of Covington Fire Department initiated an offensive attack,” O’Brien said.

While on the scene, Fire Service employees received word from neighbors that an elderly woman lived in the house and was usually at home. Crews conducted an interior search of the residence and located the woman's remains.

Newton County Fire along with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department and the State Fire Marshall’s Office are still investigating the cause of the fire.
