The 22-year-old man behind the wheel during the deadly crash that killed 21-year-old Cecilia Gonzales Sept. 21 has been charged in her death.

Steven Anthony Aguilar was booked into the Newton County Jail on Sept. 25, on charges of homicide by vehicle, DUI, open container, no seatbelts, reckless driving, limited license violation and improper lane usage.

Gonzales was the passenger in a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, being driven by Aguilar when the crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Flat Shoals Road.

According to reports from the Georgia State Patrol, Aguilar was driving eastbound on Flat Shoals and approaching Ga. Highway 36, when his vehicle left the roadway on the right side. He reportedly overcorrected, causing the truck to travel back onto the road, across the westbound lane and off the north shoulder. The vehicle then struck a tree with the front passenger side.

Both Aguilar and Gonzales were ejected from the vehicle.

Aguilar was transported to Grady Hospital by Newton County EMS with serious injuries. Gonzales was transported to Atlanta Medical Center where she passed away shortly after arrival.

Aguilar is currently being held on $21,000 bond, and pending an electronic ankle monitor, according to his booking report.
