John Douglas has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation from Georgia Perimeter College.

According to an official with GPC, the school is still gathering facts after Douglas has been in the news for racially and sexually charged comments he posted on his Facebook page recently. GPC confirmed Douglas will be placed on a paid leave.

“We condemn the reprehensible, offensive and utterly unacceptable words Mr. Douglas posted to his Facebook page,” said GPC in an email to The News. “In no way does Mr. Douglas speak for Georgia Perimeter College.

Douglas has been with GPC, at its Clarkston campus as Military Outreach Center Coordinator since September 2013. The Newton County Post 1 Commissioner served more than 17 years with the U.S. Army, and has been a state representative and senator. He came under fire last week after a news report concerning a social media post he made on a viral photograph of a black woman desecrating the American Flag.

Since then his resignation from the Newton County BOC has been asked for by the Newton County Democratic Party and U.S. Congressman Hank Johnson.

“I am shocked and appalled that a public official who represents constituents in the same county that I represent would harbor attitudes towards African-Americans – and Black women in particular – as venomous and hateful as those expressed by former Republican state lawmaker and current Newton County Commissioner John Douglas,” said Johnson, who represents Georgia's 4th congressional district.

Douglas has stated, via Facebook, that he would continue his work as a Newton County commissioner.

"I appreciate his position as a Congressman and have great respect for him but I am not leaving," Douglas said. "I was elected to represent the first district and that is what I will continue to do."
