A missing Covington man's vehicle was found engulfed in flames with a dead man's body in the trunk, according to Atlanta Police officials.

The burning vehicle was discovered in southwest Atlanta by the Atlanta Fire Department. After firefighters extinguished the fire, they found the body of what appeared to be a black male in the trunk, according to Atlanta Police.

The car belonged to Gregory Vernon Harris, who was reported missing Friday evening in Newton County by a family member, according to Newton County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison.

The family member who filed the missing persons report told officers that Harris normally called his family every day and after several unanswered messages, the family member became worried and went to his residence. At the home, items were found displaced, and the family member then contacted authorities, said Morrison.

No time frame was given on how long Harris had been missing before the report was filed.

The cause of death is unknown at this time, and the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office said they have not yet identified the charred body found in the trunk.
