Day of Prayer events planned locally
Gatherings scheduled in Social Circle, Oxford on Thursday

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. - Social Circle's churches will sponsor an event Thursday morning to mark the National Day of Prayer.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. on the lawn of City Hall, 166 N. Cherokee Road.

An observance is also planned from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at the Old Church in Oxford, 1011 Wesley St.

The National Day of Prayer dates to 1952 when it was declared by a joint resolution of Congress and signed by President Harry S. Truman. A 1988 law signed by President Ronald Reagan set the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May each year.

The theme this year is Ephesians 4:3, "Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."

Other nearby events to mark the occasion include a service at noon at First United Methodist Church in Conyers, a time of prayer at noon at the Butts County Courthouse in Jackson, and a community prayer service at 6 p.m. at Jackson First Baptist Church.
